Accommodation | Commercial | Education | Healthcare | Leisure | Restoration & Heritage

Edgehill University - Faculty of Health
Location: Ormskirk
Architect: Owen Ellis Partnership
Principal Contractor: John Turner & Sons

The Faculty of Health provides education for health care professionals in Merseyside and the North West, and is one of the best facilities in the country. It is an extremely busy environment and safe and efficient access, egress and movement around the building are of paramount importance.

The variety of access and egress requirements were complex and a close working relationship between Lloyd Worrall and the architect evolved to ensure energy-efficient solutions and products that aid compliance with the DDA were supplied.

As well as the door furniture, Lloyd Worrall specified and scheduled sliding door and swing door units for high-pedestrian areas together with fully automatic electro-hydraulic swing door operators and cam-action closers.

Lloyd Worrall also introduced the architect to Dorma’s innovative movable wall systems which were supplied to the Faculty’s 400 seater T-shaped lecture theatre. The walls perform as a functional room divider and as a reliable sound insulator.

“Lloyd Worrall developed the specification, schedule and suiting in conjunction with the architect, providing options and samples for approval.  As important as the performance requirements, with a fast construction programme and a completion date that was critical for the university, the ability to supply the ironmongery to site on time and efficiently for installation was absolutely key.  Lloyd Worrall met the programme with a competitive cost.

Despite the intensity of use in a student environment, seven months after handover there have been no reported failures."

Barnsley Grouped Schools PFI
Location: Barnsley
Architect: HLM Architects
Principal Contractor: Mowlem/Carillion

The architectural ironmongery for 13 new-build primary schools in Barnsley had to be robust and low maintenance.

Lloyd Worrall supplied all the schools over a two-year period. Robust Chiltern 23 stainless steel door furniture was specified together with Dorma cam-action door closers and all the ancillary hardware. We also supplied access control solutions to the community areas.

Sharrow School
Location: Sheffield
Architect: Sheffield City Council Architects
Principal Contractor: Kier Ltd

Sharrow School defies traditional ideas of what a school should look and feel like.

The new school, which has been built for the amalgamation of nursery, infant and junior schools into a single entity, is one of the most environmentally friendly buildings in Sheffield and is setting the standard for schools in the future.

The project involved the construction of a three-storey junior and infant school together with a 420 place primary school with a 52 place nursery unit. Each classroom has access to outside space, daylight and natural ventilation as well as “innovative” opportunities for outdoor play.

‘I would commend Lloyd Worrall for their expertise and critical design guidance during the Sharrow School project. Their knowledge has contributed much to its overall success.

The challenging budget did not offer the luxury of extravagant specification but their care and thoughtful choices have successfully integrated ironmongery into components from a range of suppliers. This has allowed a coordinated approach to appearance and security that would not have been possible with the separate items.

An attractive solution has been achieved by the use of items with durable performance requirements yet are of modest appearance whose success is often their unobtrusive quality. This simple ethos combined happily with the sustainable strategy for the whole development.’

Cath Basilio, Senior Architect, Sheffield City Council

Sharrow School has won an accolade of awards, including the SCALA (Society of Chief Architects of Local Authorities) Civic Building of the Year 2008 award and 3 RIBA Yorkshire White Rose awards:

Winner of the RIBA Yorkshire White Rose 2008 Sustainable Futures award.

Winner of the RIBA Yorkshire White Rose 2008 Client of the Year award.

Silver White Rose award for Architecture.

Grace Academy
Location: Birmingham
Architect: BDP Architects
Principal Contractor: Houston Cox Northern

This flagship education project by BDP Architects required an access control system to give the Academy security, flexibility, ease of use and future-proofing.

Yannedis responded by supplying a system where students are able to use their cards to access study areas and classrooms through the individual door stand-alone units whilst important access points in the building use wall readers that regularly download and upload information to the card that is presented and to the central computer system.

The virtual net system unique to this product gives long-term flexibility as it is easily extended to cover additional areas without wiring needs. The system can be rolled out in the future to include locker access, car park barriers and cashless vending machines.

Chaucer Business and Enterprise College
Location: Sheffield
Architect: Sheffield City Council Architects
Principal Contractor: Willmott Dixon

The college has undergone a £15m transformation to upgrade services and infrastructure.

Products chosen by Lloyd Worrall were selected for their durability and high performance standards combined with a high level of resistence to physical abuse found in a school building.

Locks which give the client the choice to change the function of the lock in case of an emergency were specified together with slide arm door closers with back-check and built-in door stops to limit abuse.
