A comprehensive service, technical assistance and collaborative working delivers flagship SEND school

Close cooperation across the design and build team meets Lloyd Worrall’s understanding of education projects to deliver a fantastic flagship school.

Buildings for education have their own unique challenges – with a requirement to be hard wearing and functional yet providing an aesthetic environment for their users. In addition, there are numerous legislative obligations that must be met covering fire performance, noise reduction, safety, and accessibility.

Lloyd Worrall’s understanding of the demands and requirements needed within education environments help us keep safety, durability, and accessibility at the forefront of school projects. Our experience within the sector has shown that building relationships and working collaboratively with the project stakeholders from an early stage can make a complex project work effectively and efficiently.

Prestley Wood Academy is a brand-new Specialist Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND) located at the heart of the Alconbury Weald development in Huntingdon.

With capabilities to cater for 150 pupils aged between 4-19 years, the school excels in accessible facilities such as a state-of-the-art hydrotherapy pool and provides unique, contemporary, and enjoyable learning experiences for young people.

Morgan Sindall Construction and Atkins Architects delivered the school. Our specification team was involved from an early stage, working closely with the design team, and joinery sub-contractor Middlesex Joinery to deliver the scheme and meet client specifications.

Led by our Southern team, Lloyd Worrall supplied over 200 doorsets and associated ironmongery providing a full-service solution that spanned the entirety of the project, from specification and scheduling through to technical advice and aftercare.

The door requirements consisted of veneered and prime-faced doors together with side screens and fanlights and a robust, hard-wearing stainless steel ironmongery solution.

Our technical team were on hand to assist with the specification of several specialist doors. Fully encapsulated sealed doors were the solution for the “wet” areas with high moisture content in the air. The high-performance properties and range of bright PVC colours of these doors combined with the impact resistance is ideally suited to heavy trafficked school pool areas and changing rooms. Our technical knowledge was tested when providing 2.7m high doors with frame adjustments to accommodate overhead hoist rails and equipment while ensuring fire safety regulations were met.

The project is one of the first to be covered by Lloyd Worrall’s InterspecThread software to support the requirements as set out in the Building Safety Act. The InterspecThread software solution allows open access to fire door manufacture, installation, and maintenance records, therefore meeting the requirements of establishing a Golden Thread of information.

With years of doorset and ironmongery experience, Lloyd Worrall internal doorsets are built to withstand the rigour of daily use in an education setting. Crucially, all doorsets are tested and certified to the highest standards for fire safety and backed by a highly experienced technical team. In addition, Lloyd Worrall provides customers with an easy to access system for the management of fire doors in the form of InterspecThread.
